Revelate Designs Sweetroll Handlebar Bag Review

Tested and reviewed for bikepacking use

The Sweetroll is the bag that helped popularize the handlebar roll format. Its unique sling design allows the bag to flex with the handlebars without affecting steering. The dry-bag closure keeps contents protected from rain and river crossings.

The Revelate Designs Sweetroll is one of those products that defined a category. Before the Sweetroll, most bikepackers were improvising handlebar setups with dry bags and voile straps. The Sweetroll gave them a purpose-built solution, and its sling design became the template that most competitors have since copied.

The key innovation is how the Sweetroll mounts. Instead of clamping rigidly to the handlebars, it hangs from a sling that connects to your headset spacer and handlebar ends. This allows the bag to move independently of the handlebars as you steer. On tight singletrack switchbacks, you don't feel the bag fighting your steering inputs. This sounds like a small thing until you've ridden a rigid-mount handlebar bag through a twisty descent — the Sweetroll's sling design is a genuine safety and handling improvement.

The 15L capacity is generous. We regularly fit a sleeping bag, puffy jacket, spare base layer, and still have room for a small stuff sack of miscellaneous items. The dry-bag roll-top closure seals with a clip buckle and keeps contents dry through sustained rain. We've crossed knee-deep river crossings with the Sweetroll submerged and found everything bone-dry inside.

Build quality is excellent. The Spindrift fabric used on the outer shell is the same waterproof laminate Revelate uses across their line — it's proven tough after thousands of miles of gravel, rain, and trail abuse. The attachment points are reinforced and show no signs of wear even after extended use.

The Sweetroll's main limitation is accessibility. Once packed and sealed, getting to items inside requires stopping, unclipping the roll-top, and digging through a single open cavity. There's no internal organization — it's essentially a cylinder you stuff things into. For items you need during the ride (snacks, phone, rain jacket), you'll want a separate top-tube bag or anything-cage. The Sweetroll is for stuff you pack at camp and don't touch until you make camp again.

It can also sag if you overload it or don't pack it tightly. The sling design means gravity is always pulling the bag downward, and if contents shift, the bag can droop and contact your front tire on rough terrain. The fix is to pack the Sweetroll firm — compress your sleeping bag tight, fill gaps with clothing, and roll the top down snug. A well-packed Sweetroll rides beautifully. A loosely packed one is a problem.

For the price and the functionality, the Sweetroll remains one of the best handlebar bag options. It's been proven on everything from the Tour Divide to weekend overnighters, and that trail pedigree shows in every design decision.

Who Is the Revelate Designs Sweetroll Handlebar Bag Best For?

Classic handlebar roll setup for sleeping bags and clothing. If that describes your riding style, the Sweetroll Handlebar Bag should be at the top of your shortlist. It sits in the Handlebar Bags category alongside 11other products we've reviewed.

How It Compares

At 280g and $130, the Sweetroll Handlebar Bag is 172g heavier than the lightest option in this category (the Apidura Racing Handlebar Mini Pack at 108g). The most budget-friendly option is the Surly Junk Strap at $30.

The price-to-weight ratio comes in at $46 per 100g — a premium price point, but you're paying for quality, materials, and design that justify the investment for serious bikepackers.
